About 100 buds opened overnight Sept. 10 on this night-blooming cereus cactus in a yard near the intersection of Cordova Drive and Manatee Avenue in Palma Sola Park. The tropical species usually blooms one night a year and the flowers wilt by noon the next day.

Tops in Top Notch: Puppy love

Peter Donahue wins The Islander’s Top Notch Pet Photo Contest with this image of his golden retriever, Finley, and his son’s buddy, Wilson. Donahue, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, took the photo with his iPhone 8 in April, shortly before he made his annual visit to Anna Maria Island. And the title of the photo? He called it “Puppy love.”
